Andrew is a journalist and started on the daily news team. He came from Reuters.

Andrew started the #GetHired Newsletter. His team is separate from the LinkedIn product team.

Hiring is coming back but it has a long way to go. The LinkedIn economists looked to other countries like the Peoples’ Republic of China to see what to expect. It is really a mixed bag.

This is a recession like nothing we have ever seen. For some nothing has changed. For others, it has been devastating.

Industry Perspective

All industries have been affected.

Small retailers have been hit hard. Grocery stores and other retailers selling necessities are doing very well.

Healthcare support companies are doing well, i.e. staffing, billing, and other support services.

Technology companies slowed their hiring at the beginning of the pandemic. The big companies have continued to hire throughout the pandemic. Others have slowly started to come back.

Trends in Remote Work

Andrew references a Wall Street Journal article, What CEOs Really Think About Remote Work.

A lot of CEOs are not fond of remote work. Andrew senses that remote work will stay but not in the current fashion.

50+ Job Search

Andrew discusses that when a recession hits most companies move to cheaper labor by moving to less experienced younger workers.

Massive layoffs were at the beginning and time will tell us how many of those over 50 years of age move into the long-term unemployment category.

This recession is hitting people who have never been laid off.

Learning how to pitch yourself is key.

Here is the lifeboat jobs article.

Advice

Andrew suggests you take time every day to reflect on what you want in your career. You need to keep going if you want to continue to work. Having an overarching mission that you want to do. Think holistically.
