Podcast #237 – Lotus, Marc’s Wife, Talks about her Experiences
Description:
This week I am speaking with my wife Lotus. It has been a while since I recorded an expat episode and I thought that you would enjoy her perspective.
We have been living in Ajijic Mexico for 3 years. We just sold our condo in Austin Texas and by the time this episode is published I hope we have a contract accepted on a house in Ajijic.
I want you to hear her perspective because before moving to Mexico, she had never lived or worked outside of Texas. I, on the other hand, grew up in New Jersey, went to college in Chicago, and worked for 40 years in Austin, Texas. During that time, I worked in close to 40 different countries. All of the teaching I did around the world left me very culturally adept. My wife did not have that experience.
You will hear that my wife is extremely happy here and if would have told me that 5 years ago, I probably would not have been skeptical at best.
Now, rather than a word from our sponsor, I have an announcement and an ask for you.
Starting in November of 2021, I will be scaling back some of the content creation for the Career Pivot blog and this podcast.
I want and NEED your input. I have created a survey that covers both the blog and this podcast. Please take a moment to stop now and go to CareerPivot.com/survey2021. There will be a link in the show notes in your podcast player and on the career pivot website.
I want to know which types of episodes you have liked, what you would like more of and I very much need your input on the show notes, like do you even read them.
I will be keeping the survey open through the end of September of 2021.

Living In Mexico
Lotus, who is Marc Miller’s wife, loves living close to the Plaza, learning about the culture, and getting to hear the horses ride and walk down the cobblestone roads. She is getting a small introduction to various farm animals and enjoys Mexican-style housing.
Lotus states that in their current location they can interact and enjoy time with other expats. In Mexico, they can also experience drastic seasons between very dry and very rainy. When the rain comes it drastically transforms the look. The trees instantly get greener and begin to grow back their leaves. Normal trails are unnoticeable by the appearance of full trees lining the way. Lotus says it is a beautiful place both during those dry and rainy months.
Mexico through Covid
Parts of their community are slowly opening back up. While required to wear masks, Lotus is hoping that everyone can follow the rules and continue to progress. Many places have things to do outside or places to eat that had outdoor dining which made it easier to get out of the house. Lotus states that their big adventure every 3 months was going to Costco. They would take the scenic route and enjoy the day out. Costco did a great job of following the Covid requirements and made all their shoppers feel safe.
Healthcare
She has found healthcare to be very pleasant in Mexico. Lotus states that they genuinely care and are interested in your whole history. They may not jump straight to medication and try other routes. The Doctors are very educated and consistently check in to make sure things are working.
She also states that she has never had so many female doctors and enjoys that they use their first names in being addressed. Marc agrees that they use a much more holistic approach and they take their time with each appointment that they schedule. Marc and Lotus don’t use much insurance and typically pay out of pocket for their medical services. They say that the services are very affordable and that normal insurance like we have here, isn’t necessary.
What is next
Marc and Lotus have put an official offer in on a house. They look forward to moving into their own place and be able to change things that they want. They appreciate having rented and gotten to know the area and really find what they are looking for.
Advice for future Expat
It is definitely a change. Marc and Lotus would at first go for a short time and visit. Then they would go for a bit longer before finally deciding to make it a permanent stay. Lotus has a hard time thinking of much that she misses about the United States. They have really found their home in Mexico and have fallen in love with their lives there.
Neither of them has any plans to move back to the United States.
