Rewards – How about giving LinkedIn Recommendations

I came across a blog post by Ed Han called Art of the LinkedIn Recommendation or: Just When You Thought Gift Giving Was Over . . .

Ed gives guidance on giving recommendations through out the year.  What this brought up for me was back in the 1980s I co-ran a help desk that supported Mechanical Engineers on very early computer automated mechanical design tools.  We had a IBM mainframe computer (which had less memory and compute power than my Apple Mac that I am typing this post on.), hundreds of expensive drafting terminals and multiple large electrostatic plotters.  My team supported the application software and plotters but the IT department supported the mainframe, terminals, and all of the telecommunications infrastructure.  I depended on my IT department and they did a great job for us.

Every year, I would write an e-mail addressed to the IT management that would be sent under my managers account, that would document all of the excellent service that IT had provided us in the last year. It was my way to make sure all of the people who supported my team to know they were valued.  I was their only customer who did this.

Most support people rarely hear “Thank You”.  They are popular when something breaks.

Rewarding the People Who of Have Helped Me

I am going to restart this practice.  I am going to give LinkedIn recommendations to people who supported me getting my business started. You may remember in my post on rewards that the most valued reward for me is to have my customer pat me on the back for a job well done.  The holidays are a great time to give the people who support you a Reward!

How about you?  Do you thank all of the people who support you?  How about doing it during the holidays but also as Ed suggests, through out the year. Let me hear from you below with a comment.  Share this using the buttons below.

  1. What a great philosophy, Marc. I love to give accolades to others, and this practical suggestion makes doing that very easy, and very helpful to the recipient. Excellent!

Marc, this is a great idea that does not take a lot of time and can bear much fruit to the recipient. “Thank you” are two wonderful words to hear!
