A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers
If you’re a Baby Boomer, is it too late to change careers? Many Baby Boomers either can’t retire or don’t want to, but they want a change. Maybe a career they’ve always dreamed of or just something more fulfilling.
Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for Baby Boomers shows that change is possible. It requires a strategy and a series of practical steps including:
- Study yourself to understand your core needs in a way you probably never did with your first career. Like what kinds of rewards do you prefer? What kind of boss do you work best with? How much physical activity do you need? How do you like to make decisions? What are your needs not only for money but for time and freedom?
- Strategically network with people in the field you’re interested in to find out what the job is really like.
- Develop a statement about what kind of job you’re looking that covers all your core needs.
- Build a tribe of people who can help you make your transition, including introducing you to others connected in the field.
- Work on your skill set including using LinkedIn and other social media effectively.
- Negotiate for what you want, beginning with items that have more to do with your quality of life than money.
Repurpose Your Career not only gives practical, step-by-step advice for how to make a successful transition, but deals with the challenging issues of having to ask for help from others and having to become the novice again after years of working to become an expert. If you’re looking to find a career that meets your needs and you can grow into for the next 20 years, this book is the roadmap you’re looking for.
Each chapter has set of action steps. You can download a copy of these action steps in Microsoft Word format here.

As a career coach, I am always looking for new resources to share with my clients. I will, from now on, be putting this at the top of my list. First of all, I really enjoyed reading this book. I often get stuck trying to trudge through other books out there that are filled with acronyms and industry jargon; you’ll find none of it in this book. Only straight-forward advice here.
My favorite piece of wisdom is one that I’ve been using with my own clients since reading his juicy book: instead of calling it an informational interview, call it A-I-R, which stands for advice, insights and recommendations. Now that really is a breath of fresh air! Who could possibly say no to you when you ask for advice, insights and recommendations!?
I, too, am a huge proponent of building a ‘tribe’ and love how he devoted an entire chapter to why it’s important and how it can help you in your encore career!
Bravo, Marc!

I love this book! It is highly readable, insightful and action-oriented. The concept of Career Pivots as a series of half-steps towards a goal brilliantly captures the process of career change.

Kudos to Marc for staying true to his goal of creating “A Practical Guide” for Baby Boomers as they tentatively navigate their way toward an often scary search for a new career.
His book has a laser focus on the key aspects to successfully accomplishing a midlife career change: Who am I? What do I really want to do? What matters to me in all aspects of my work? How to search for and land a job that will satisfy my needs? Midlife career transition is definitely not for sissies and Marc gives practical action steps along the path to success.

Marc has written a book those in career transition need to read. He stated he likes systems and that is exactly what he has provided—an organized approach to helping one find the position that doesn’t seem like a job. Follow his system and you’ll be well on your way to be able to laser focus your job search. People will understand what you are looking for and you will know how and with whom you should network to find the position that matches your personality and skills.
