Podcast #204 – Diann Wingert Discusses Mindset Issues and How You Can Change
Description:
This will be the last podcast episode of 2020 which for many of us has been one dumpster fire of a year. Therefore it is time to plan for 2021 and I have kicked off my annual podcast survey. If you would be to take the survey, I would be most appreciative.
I will be planning out the podcast schedule for 2021 during the month of December and the first half of January, and I would very much appreciate any feedback you can give me.
In this week’s episode, I have Diann Wingert from Diann Wingert coaching. Diann is a former licensed therapist and now coaches entrepreneurs. Her tag list “My Jam” is helping others like me be successful in work and life. She also has The Driven Woman podcast.
I know Diann from the Smart Passive Income Pro online community where we both are members. I wanted to finish out the year discussing mindsets. We have all been thrown out of our comfort zones in the last 9 months and I thought this would be a good topic to discuss before the holidays.
The Career Pivot membership mastermind gets mentioned in the article, How to Build a Home Business Support Group, published on NextAvenue.org.
This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. Check out the Career Pivot Community. Make sure and pick up my latest book, Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the 2nd Half of Life Third Edition.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck
People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed.
The brain has a negative bias. The brain is wired to look for bad or negative things to keep us safe.
Mindset traps include perfectionism, people-pleasing, procrastination, imposter complex, analysis paralysis, and fear of failure.
Often the people who are most susceptible to the imposter complex are those who are the most accomplished.
Identity Transformation
Identify can be shaped by:
- Profession
- Role in a Company
- Corporate Brand
Diann talks about the identity issues she went through going from therapist to coach.
An identity change can be very disruptive and take longer than you think it will even if it was self-initiated.
Relationship with failure:
- Be open to whatever happens including falling on your face
- Be curious about the experience
- Be non-judgemental
There is success or feedback.
The identity change can happen more quickly if we can embrace a child’s mind.
To approach a situation with a child’s mind is to not expect of yourself based on prior experience.
How Diann Started Her Online Business
Diann worked with a lot of students and people in the entertainment industry. When they would move to go to school or for work they would want to keep working with Diann over the phone or video like Facetime or Skype. Diann’s first reaction was that is not going to work.
This was an example of a fixed mindset, that is not going to be the same, this is not going to work, and I am not going to do it. She had to change her fixed thinking and give it a try.
She was introduced to working online by the clients. She had a client who was local but wanted to meet over video because of concerns about traffic and parking. Diann was a bit shocked but this incident shifted her mindset.
Closing Advice
Everyone has mindset issues. Every time we expand our comfort zones we will encounter new mindset blocks or as some call them limiting beliefs.
You can’t believe everything you think. Just because you are thinking I cannot do this, I am going to fail… just because you are thinking it does not make it so.
It is never too late to change your mind about who you are. Just because you fail does not make you a failure.
Diann recommends trying the Think up app. Which is a great way of using affirmations to get you moving forward.
