Podcast #165 – Marc works with “Phil” (not his real name) to pivot his career in the first of four episodes featuring “Phil”.
Description:
This week I start the next Career Pivot evaluation series called “Can Phil Repurpose His Career?”. This will be the fourth individual I have done this with. Previously, I worked with Tim, Sarah, and Juan (not their real names). This time it is Phil, a gentleman in his early 60s, who spent 20 years in the military and then the last 10 or so years in the private sector. What you will hear is the military was a good fit for Phil and served him well. Since leaving the military, work has been a mixed bag. As he looks to move on to an encore career he wants to learn more about himself so he makes a good choice.
Most of these episodes are all in the top 10% of downloaded episodes for this podcast. This will be a 4-episode series where the first 2 episodes comprise the first feedback session. The next 2 episodes are the 2nd and 3rd feedback sessions. I do not record the 4th feedback session as it is a review and usually gets too personal for this podcast.

In the first couple of episodes I take Phil through his Birkman signature report. The Birkman assessment is primarily used with executive teams, i.e. C-Suite, because of the complexity. You will hear how we discuss the report in-depth. After each session, I give Phil homework which is to use the report to dig into his past, in order to find situations where he got stressed and then understand why.
Later, when we go through his preferred workstyles report, I will give him a decision-making style writeup. I then ask him to find three problems he solved at work and three problems he solved in his personal life. I want him to self-observe how he solves problems using the writeup as a roadmap. He should be able to explain how he thinks.
He will construct multiple products from what he learns from the assessment, delving back into his 30-plus years of work experience. I like to say we have a lot of big data in our heads. I use the assessment to access that data so that you understand what worked and did not work in our careers. This is not a simple process, and it requires a lot of introspection.
If this process interests you, I am offering a 30% discount if you tell me you listened to this podcast. This is a month-long process and you will be required to do a fair amount of introspection, but most people who have gone through this process have gained a great deal of insight into themselves. More importantly, they have learned how they changed their behaviors to fit in work or society. I know that personally, I learned that I twisted myself into a pretzel to make myself successful. Unfortunately, when I hit my 50s, it became exhausting. If you are interested, just email me at podcast@careerpivot.com.
