Podcast #216 – The 50+ Self Employed Life Transition with Jeffrey Shaw
Description:
This week I interview Jeffrey Shaw. His bio is as follows:
How many people can say they’ve never worked for anyone else? Selling eggs door-to-door at 14 years old began a lifetime of self-employment. As a small business consultant, Jeffrey Shaw coaches self-employed and small business owners through all the business growth and personal development they need for a successful business.
Drawing on his experience as a renowned portrait photographer, Jeffrey sees in others what they don’t see in themselves and apply the business strategies that result in a successful business and fulfilled life.
Jeffrey’s TEDx Lincoln Square talk is featured on TED.com, he’s the host of the top-rated podcast, The Self-Employed Life, author of The Self-Employed Life, and LINGO, an in-demand keynote speaker at conferences, events, and universities, a LinkedIn Learning instructor, and contributor to various publications.

Jeffrey today is a small business coach.
He is a 35-year portrait photographer for affluent families. For 35 years he sold a product that no one needed. He has a strategic mindset.
1 in 5 60+-year-old employees has been laid off during the pandemic.
Historically, with the higher rate of unemployment in the economy, the rate of self-employment rises. Jeffrey dedicates himself to helping people transitioning from employee life to self-employment life.
First Steps
The first step is what find out what excites you? How do you want to live? What are your life goals? What do you bring to the table?
If you are still employed give yourself 6 months to a year of a runway. Make a safe leap.
Having the clarity about what you want to create will alleviate your anxiety about starting your own business.
Get help. Jeffrey says, “You cannot read the label from inside the jar”.
If something comes easy you should charge more and by the value delivered not by how long it takes to solve the problem.

Jeffrey uses the metaphor of Tarzan. He swings from vine to vine but this only works if you let go of the previous vine. What are you holding onto?
You have to learn how to let go of how things used to be.
Jeffrey refers to this time as a great realization.
