Podcast #175 – Marc Interviews with Daniel Elizalde, Head of IoT for North America at Ericsson
Description:
Daniel Elizalde has pivoted industries multiple times in his career. He has created and managed his personal brand and career through the use of a blog and a podcast.
He has gone from being a product manager at an e-commerce company to switching industries to the renewable energy industry, to switching again to the Internet of Things (IoT). He used his blog danielelizalde.com and later his podcast IoT Product Leadership to demonstrate he had the needed expertise at the time when he had no experience.

Daniel was working as Product Manager for Volusion in 2014.
Daniel had the product skill but not the industry experience. He started to interview people who were product managers in the renewable energy industry. This allowed him to connect with industry leaders and develop street credibility in the renewable energy industry.
He leveraged his early interviews to get connected to more and more heavy hitters.
Daniel moved to San Francisco and was hired as head of product for an energy storage company.
Pivoting to IoT
Daniel realized he wanted to get into the Internet of Things (IoT). So, he started blogging on IoT.
Daniel approached Stanford University about teaching an IoT course and he showed them his blog during the interview. That landed him the teaching position.
Daniel became an independent consultant as an IoT expert. He started with TechProductManagement.com which he renamed to DanielElizalde.com. He wanted to brand himself through his blog.
He wanted to coach executives in medium to large companies. He had never held an executive title for a major corporation. That is when Daniel created the IoT Product Leadership podcast.
He interviewed some major heavy hitters in the IoT industry. He did not just interview the executives but constructed the episodes as a discussion so that Daniel could demonstrate his expertise. At this point, people were contacting him to be on his podcast.
He attracted a lot of coaching clients from the people he interviewed.
Pivoting to Innovation Study
Daniel was interested in going back to a big company after the birth of his daughter. He found the Ericsson innovation lab had a position open, a former guest on his podcast knew the hiring manager, and within 2 weeks of finding the job, he had an offer.
He has built a brand around his podcast and website. He now leverages the Ericsson brand to build his brand.
