Book Recommendations from Repurpose Your Career
I make a lot of book recommendations and references in the 3rd edition of Repurpose Your Career and I have been asked if I can consolidate that list. The Career Pivot website will be going a major overhaul in the 4th quarter of 2019 and the book will get some minor updates before the end of the year which will include a link to a consolidated list of book recommendations.
Until that happens below are the books that are referenced in the latest edition of Repurpose Your Career.
Positive Intelligence: Why Only 20% of Teams and Individuals Achieve Their True Potential AND HOW YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOURS
I have been using this book with clients for years and numerous members of the Career Pivot Community are utilizing the techniques described in this book and have signed up for the programs offered.
Amazon Description
In his popular Stanford University lectures, Shirzad Chamine reveals how to achieve one’s true potential for both professional success and personal fulfillment. His groundbreaking research exposes ten well-disguised mental Saboteurs. Nearly 95 percent of the executives in his Stanford lectures conclude that these Saboteurs cause “significant harm” to achieving their full potential. With Positive Intelligence, you can learn the secret to defeating these internal foes.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking
The concept of restorative niches came from this book. This is the inserting into your daily activities that restore you. This could be sitting by a window or going outside while taking a phone call. If might be scheduling a time to read a book during a day that is full of activities that suck the life out of you.
Amazon Description
The book that started the Quiet Revolution
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.
Conversational Intelligence: How Great Leaders Build Trust and Get Extraordinary Results
This book is not how to have better conversations but how to have deeper conversation which triggers a variety of positive behaviors.
Amazon Description
The key to success in life and business is to become a master at Conversational Intelligence. It’s not about how smart you are, but how open you are to learn new and effective powerful conversational rituals that prime the brain for trust, partnership, and mutual success. Conversational Intelligence translates the wealth of new insights coming out of neuroscience from across the globe and brings the science down to earth so people can understand and apply it in their everyday lives. Author Judith Glaser presents a framework for knowing what kind of conversations trigger the lower, more primitive brain; and what activates higher-level intelligence such as trust, integrity, empathy, and good judgment. Conversational Intelligence makes complex scientific material simple to understand and apply through a wealth of easy to use tools, examples, conversational rituals, and practices for all levels of an organization.
Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder
Many of the concepts described in the chapter Learn to Embrace Creative Destruction in the 3rd edition of Repurpose Your Career came from Nassim Taleb’s work. I could not read this book but had to listen to the audible version as it is very deep. I am currently listening to it again.
Amazon Description
Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the bestselling author of The Black Swan and one of the foremost thinkers of our time, reveals how to thrive in an uncertain world.
Just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension, and rumors or riots intensify when someone tries to repress them, many things in life benefit from stress, disorder, volatility, and turmoil. What Taleb has identified and calls “antifragile” is the category of things that not only gain from chaos but need it in order to survive and flourish.

This was the first book that was recommended for me to read when I started Career Pivot. It is the bible on consultive selling. It is very easy to read and the methods described are easy to implement.

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

Amazon Description
Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success
Adam Grant introduces us to givers, takers, and matchers. I reference Adam Grant’s book in the chapter on weak ties.
Amazon Description
A groundbreaking look at why our interactions with others hold the key to success, from the bestselling author of Originals
For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But in today’s dramatically reconfigured world, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. In Give and Take, Adam Grant, an award-winning researcher and Wharton’s highest-rated professor, examines the surprising forces that shape why some people rise to the top of the success ladder while others sink to the bottom. Praised by social scientists, business theorists, and corporate leaders, Give and Take opens up an approach to work, interactions, and productivity that is nothing short of revolutionary.
