Podcast #197 – Marc Discusses the 50+ Job Search with Career Sherpa Hannah Morgan
Here is the beginning of Hannah’s About page:
Hi, I’m Hannah Morgan, aka, Career Sherpa, a nationally recognized author, and speaker, and job search strategist.
What I love doing is helping people understand what actions they need to take to find a job faster. Job hunting is hard work but I follow the trends closely to help get you up and running.
I’ve had my share of unsatisfying jobs and have pivoted from legal assistant to telemarketing, to HR.
My positions in Human Resources, Outplacement Services, Workforce Development, and Career Services, equipped me with a 360 degree perspective on job search topics.
What I’ve learned is that in today’s job search, technology, strategy, and even resume deliverables are morphing rapidly, shifting the way people find and land jobs. The explosive reliance and relevance of social media and online visibility, in general, have radically changed the job search landscape. Your job search needs to be proactive, not reactive.
I think that says it all.

Job Landscape
Hannah says there are 6 million jobs available down from 7 million jobs available before the pandemic struck.
People are getting hired and many are more senior level.
Hannah discusses someone who found a job in the healthcare IT space in a month. He found a job that was not advertised and found it through networking. He was an innovative thinker and ran a very innovative job search.
There are others that Hannah is working with and they are struggling because they are expecting it to work the way it used to work. Nothing is working the way it should work.
The jobs are still there but employers are taking much longer to hire.
Industries
Innovation is key.
Low-interest rates have a positive impact on residential real estate.
College and Universities are struggling.
Transportation services and warehousing is going strong.
Trends in Remote Work
Big tech firms are staying remote into 2021.
Hannah has been hearing that recruiters are setting the expectations that employees will be back in the office in a year.

Not all companies have gone remotely. Hannah talks about one company in Rochester, NY, that did not close down and send everyone home.
Hannah on the 50 Job Search
Hannah says if she was to do a job search, she would update her skills. She would take online classes.
Research the companies that are poised to do well. She feels that companies are more willing now to take industry transfer.
Indeed and LinkedIn now supports location “remote”. Look for work with companies that you want to work for, outside of your region no matter whether they list the jobs as remote.
Do You Have Children? How to Handle that Interview Question?
Recruiters are asking whether you have children at home during screening interviews.
Hannah says you could answer that you do have children at home doing online learning but you have it taken care of.
Do not give information that will cause you to be eliminated. Wait until you have an offer before you disclose whether you have children at home.
Final Thoughts
Hannah says to pursue opportunities that get you excited. You need to do some deep soul searching and reflection on what will get you excited.
Do not put all of your eggs in one basket. Create a side gig that you can turn on and off. Diversify your income.
