Alexandra Gordon is the owner of HouseSitMexico.com. Alexandra retired with her husband 10 years ago in Mexico, but a few years ago she had the opportunity to buy the domain “housesitMexico.com” and is now working on turning it into a thriving business.

It is a fascinating story of someone in the 2^nd half of life turning on their entrepreneurial juices. This an encore episode with the original interview from January of 2020. Marc interview Alexandra again in January of 2021 to see how she faired through the pandemic.

Alexandra and her husband’s house sits in Pátzcuaro, which is a large town and municipality located in the state of Michoacán, San Miguel de Allende – a colonial-era city in Mexico’s central highlands – and Lake Chapala, which is Mexico’s largest freshwater lake. Housesitters fall into 3 categories:

Professional housesitters who tend to long term travelers and possibly digital nomads
People who want to explore what it is like to live in Mexico and not in a hotel bubble
Homeowners who also housesit who tend to do the short term housesits

The length of housesitting can be a few days or as long as a year. There is a one-year membership plan as a homeowner or a housesitter or both.

Background

Alexandra has an entrepreneurial background and has her name on a lot of patents but she did not make money from them.

Alexandra discusses that there was fear of failure but she forges ahead. She believes she has just scratched the surface of the number of Americans living in Mexico.

The most successful housesit relationships have turned into friendships.

Follow Up Interview

Things slowed down a great deal but it kept going.

People continued to go north for medical treatments and needed house sitters for longer periods of time.

Alexandra made half of much money in 2021 but she probably worked half of much. She gave upgrades to homeowners so they could also be housesitters. This allowed homeowners to swap isolation bubbles with other homeowners.

Now 70% of the homeowners are now housesitters.

Alexandra is somewhat optimistic about the business in 2021. The business has already started to pick up.
