Baby Boomers – What is your Social Media Strategy?

Hey Baby Boomers, what is your social media strategy?

In my last post I asked you why you are on Social Media. Now let’s talk about strategy.

Social Media Strategy for Friends and Family

A lot of you said you are on FaceBook so that you can interact with friends and family. It is not about work.

Do you have your Facebook page locked down and private?

If your page is public it is about work. Recruiters and hiring managers will look at your Facebook page.

Do you check when you have been tagged in photos?

If someone takes a photo and tags you in the photo it shows up on your wall. If a friend likes the photo all of their friends see it.

I have had young colleagues who have photographed by friends (I use that term loosely) had the photo posted to FaceBook and then was tagged. The photos were not flattering!  If you do not pay attention to this it can affect your professional reputation or brand!

Do you post photographs while on vacation?

If you do then everyone who has access to your page knows where you are! But, but, but only my friends can see it! Well, if one of your friends likes the photo all of their friends see it. If one of their friends likes it then their friends see it. I know this is a little paranoid.

I ask the question again – What is your social media strategy for friends and family?

You are a publisher and everything you publish can become public.

Social Media Strategy for your Professional Life

From a professional perspective why are you on social media? Which of the following apply to you:

  • Establishing yourself as a thought leader
  • Promoting your skills and talents within your current organization
  • Promoting your skills and talents within your industry
  • Promoting your skills and talents to be found for your next gig. (You want recruiters and hiring managers to call you!)
  • Donating your time, skills and talents for the common good (Answering questions because your a good person)
  • Sharing in the conversation because you enjoy it

Did I miss anything? If I did please comment!

For all but the last two it is helpful to have a strategy.

Have you even thought about creating a social media strategy?

In my next post I will discuss possible strategies for each.
