Sharing Your Network

Sharing your network

I have been writing about networking.  First, I wrote about how the Quality of your Network was more important than the quantity of network connections.  Next I wrote about cultivating you network via checking in e-mail and then by regularly setting up face to face meetings.

Sharing Your NetworkI believe when you network it is all about the other person and you should expect NOTHING in return. When I am meeting with someone and if I determine I can be of some help, I just do it.

Last week, I met with my image consultant, Jean LeFebvre, to order a new shirt. Jean was telling me she was looking for companies who cared about how their employees dressed and would be willing to hire someone to make them look spiffy. Yes, I said spiffy.

In Austin Texas, were casual is king, there are not many options.  The one industry we could agree that met this criteria was lawyers, and given Austin is the state capitol we have a lot of them!

Sharing Your NetworkI offered to introduce Jean to Susan Baughman who has a business called Lawyers Don’t Know Marketing”.  Susan creates custom developed marketing programs for law firms, a rather unique business. I sent Susan an e-mail which in which the Subject Line is “Virtual Introduction” and I copied Jean.  I explained the situation and asked Susan if she could help Jean.

As it turns out Susan was looking for an image consultant for her clients and is willing to educate Jean on the art of dealing with Law Firms in Austin.

Jean did not ask me to introduce her, I offered.  Did I expect anything in return?  NO!

It is all about sharing and expecting NOTHING in return.

Does this create good Karma?  Yes.  Does good come back from this?  Yes.  When?  When you least expect it.

Are you sharing your network? Share your network with someone today!

Thank you for explaining this concept in such a concise and practical way.

Marc, I totally agree with what you wrote here, and this is exactly what I practice. In addition, I network because it is fun to share experience and also interesting to meet new people.

I am happy to share my professional network with people that I have I met face-to-face. This is one of the reasons I organize my monthly networking meetings (on the last Tuesday of every month, LinkedIn Local Austin, Texas, for those who are interested! http://linkd.in/GBgjYd)

    Cheers!

      Elizabeth,

The thing you have to remember what is fun for us (networking) is incredibly scary and distasteful for about 90% of the population. I try to stay away from the word “networking” because it tends to scary people away. It is about building “relationships”.

You have to remember you are “special” and you have a unique talent. 8^)
