#1 need that should be met in your next Career Pivot

I have written about assessments (Primarily the Birkman) and career reflection in the previous Career Pivot posts.  Let’s look at an outcome from that work.

Rewards

One of the top reasons we change jobs is because we do not feel valued. I wrote about this last summer in the post #2 reason people leave their job is (…)

Most people want and need some kind of reward for doing good work.  This can come in many forms:

  • Pay increase
  • Bonus check
  • Public Recognition and Award
  • Pat on the back and thanks from management
  • Pat on the back and thanks from your peers
  • Pat on the back and thanks from your customer

What is it for you?  For me it was the pat on the back from my customer.  When I went off to teach high school math that meant being appreciated by my students.  That did not come until the second year when my students from my first year of teaching came back and let me know how much I was appreciated. I had quite a few kids come back and make it very clear to me just how much they appreciated me for what I had done for them.

That was very hard on me to go a whole year not getting the reward I wanted and needed. At the time, I was not clear with myself what I wanted. If I had known I could have worked on coping mechanisms that will have made this less stressful.

You cannot assess your next career move if you do not know WHAT YOU WANT and more importantly NEED!!

In my work with clients and one phenomenon I am seeing is the “stealth competitor”.  These are mostly women who are very good hearted people.  They perform in the work place for the common good.  They are very good team players.  However, DARN IT, they want to be rewarded for GOOD WORK!

My response has been to work with them to learn how to ask to be rewarded in the fashion that they need!

Do you know the kinds of rewards you want and need?  Do you know how to ask for it?

I work with clients to:

  • Identify the rewards they want and need
  • Target environments where those needs are met through strategic networking and interviewing strategies.
